Dupe Olusola, CEO Teragro was one of the panelists at the WCA session dedicated to agribusiness. According to Olusola, “Over a million metric tonnes of oranges are produced in Benue yearly and prior to Teragro’s investment in the state, about 70 percent of this quantity was allowed to rot. Some of the state officials told us that children were playing football with oranges before Teragro started producing.”
Teragro is the first of its kind juice concentrate plant producing orange, mango and pineapple juice concentrates, said Olusola. An estimated $1bn worth of concentrates is imported into Nigeria annually even though the country produces a lot of these fruits locally.
“Increasingly as we have proven by the quality of our products and now with our supplying juice concentrate to international juice manufacturers that juice makers can find locally produced juice concentrate that meets international standards on quality management,” she said.
Investments in capacity building and training for farmers on optimal farming practices are necessary to ensure good quality and consistent raw materials.
